 Company Information

Modality is the developer of groundbreaking technology to transform educational, reference and consumer learning books and materials into rich media content for secure delivery and effective use on the Apple iPod.  The more than 100 million iPod owners can purchase this content through Modality’s online marketplace, raybook.com.

Today, Modality provides the technology to convert existing educational and consumer learning print and digital media for use on the iPod platform. The Company has expertise in the transformation and secure delivery of existing high-value print content, and is creating the marketplace for the distribution of this portable Lifestyle and Learning content. To date, over 100 million iPods have been sold. The demand for rich and interactive content relevant to consumer lifestyles, professional training, and educational requirements is on the rise.  However, iPod users currently do not have an effective way to access print materials on their iPods. Moreover, publishers of educational and consumer learning print content and digital media are searching for media transformation, secure delivery and distribution tools to exploit the iPod platform, allowing them to monetize existing content and reach out to the new iPod-toting generation.

Modality has pioneered a flexible digital media type - the RAYBOOKTM. Raybooks are portable packets of text, images, audio and video specifically formatted for secure distribution and simple installation on the iPod and other handheld devices. Raybooks combine the various media assets to provide consumers with easy and rapid access to specific information relevant to their education, professional training and lifestyles.

Modality, through its innovative use of existing media player technology, will expand the consumer and educational uses of iPod and other media player devices resulting in increased device sales.  In addition, publishers will be introduced to new channels and customers.

Using proprietary technology and software tools, Modality offers an end-to-end solution for publishers to transform print media assets into effective and interactive rich media for iPod or similar digital media players and to securely distribute the same to consumers.

As Modality’s solution eases the concerns and barriers faced by content owners, publishers are eager to convert more of their existing copyrighted titles into Raybook format, benefiting both publishers and consumers.  Modality has partnered with major publishers to successfully deploy several iPod promotional downloads and has piloted Raybooks in higher educational institutions.

Modality partners include the following major book publishers:

  • Elsevier
  • FA Davis
  • Houghton-Mifflin
  • John Wiley & Sons
  • Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
  • Workman Publishing Company

Modality has released over 50 titles for sale across the spectrum of higher education, medical and grades K-12 content.  Robust sales of our flagship product, Netter’s Anatomy Flash Cards for iPod, confirm the strong market for the raybook product.  Modality is actively developing partnerships with additional publishers and other content owners for future Raybook titles and expects to implement a paradigm shift in the use of iPods, other portable media players such as Microsoft’s Zune, and additional handheld devices yet to come to market.
